WiMAX Deploys Worldwide

Posted: 14 Nov 2007 11:15 PM CST

ABI Research
According to ABI Research, mobile operators and other service providers are planning mobile WiMAX networks all over the world, mainly in the 2.5 GHz and 3.5 GHz bands. ABI Research forecasts substantial numbers of WiMAX subscribers worldwide: more than 95 million using CPE devices by 2012, and almost 200 million using mobile devices, with some overlap between the two groups.

The major semiconductor and equipment makers, with the exception of Qualcomm and Ericsson, are staking out their positions for this emerging sector, while operators' enthusiasm, led by Sprint and Clearwire (a Craig McCaw startup that has received $600 million in venture backing from Intel and $300 million from Motorola) in the United States, is rising sharply. Vodafone is looking to WiMAX for some of its newer markets such as the Middle East and Eastern Europe; BT and Telecom Italia Mobile are also showing interest. In addition, ABI Research states that another as yet unnamed "major European mobile operator" is "seriously considering WiMAX."

Meanwhile chipset companies are positioning themselves to support a wide variety of device types beyond the traditional handsets and laptops, including UMPCs, mobile Internet devices, and consumer electronics products such as portable game devices, portable media players, and imaging devices.

Posted: 13 Nov 2007 11:15 PM CST

The Open Handset Alliance recently announced the Android platform, which is an open and comprehensive platform for mobile devices. Through Android, developers, wireless operators, and handset manufacturers will be better positioned to bring to market innovative new products faster and at a much lower cost. The end result will be a mobile platform that will enable wireless operators and manufacturers to give their customers better, more personal, and more flexible mobile experiences.

The Android platform is a fully integrated mobile "software stack" that consists of an operating system, middleware, user-friendly interface, and applications. The new platform will be made available under one of the most progressive, developer-friendly open-source licenses, which gives mobile operators and device manufacturers significant freedom and flexibility to design products. The Alliance will soon release an early access software development kit to provide developers with the tools necessary to create innovative and compelling applications for the platform.

Handset manufacturers and wireless operators will be free to customize Android in order to bring to market innovative new products faster and at a much lower cost. Developers will have complete access to handset capabilities and tools that will enable them to build more compelling and user-friendly services, bringing the Internet developer model to the mobile space. Consumers worldwide will have access to less expensive mobile devices that feature more compelling services, rich Internet applications and easier-to-use interfaces — ultimately creating a superior mobile experience.

The Open Handset Alliance is a multinational alliance of technology and mobile industry leaders. The goal of the Alliance is to foster innovation on mobile devices and give consumers a far better user experience than much of what is available on today's mobile platforms. Founding members of the Open Handset Alliance are Aplix, Ascender Corporation, Audience, Broadcom, China Mobile, eBay, Esmertec, Google, HTC, Intel, KDDI, LivingImage, LG, Marvell, Motorola, NMS Communications, Noser, NTT DoCoMo Inc., Nuance, Nvidia, PacketVideo, Qualcomm, Samsung, SiRF, SkyPop, SONiVOX, Sprint Nextel, Synaptics, TAT - The Astonishing Tribe, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, Texas Instruments, T-Mobile, and Wind River.

Embedded Multi-Core CPU Market

Posted: 13 Nov 2007 12:56 PM CST

VDC
According to Venture Development Corporation (VDC), revenue growth for multi-core CPUs in embedded applications is projected to be strong through 2011. Multi-core CPU revenues from embedded in 2011 will be over six times that of 2007 multi-core revenues and over 44 times 2006 levels.

The embedded market is shifting from traditional single-core processors to processors with multiple cores. Single-core processors and the performance imperative of Moore's Law may be approaching an upper limit in terms of adding increasing processing power simply by increasing clock speeds. In response to this problem, processor suppliers have turned to multi-core architectures in order to achieve performance gains. Multi-core processors have the potential of increasing processing performance while reducing processor footprints and providing better thermal characteristics.

There is a great deal of opportunities in the embedded multi-core market. However, a major gap currently exists between multi-core silicon and software enabled to take advantage of the available performance.
